School Closings and Delays

WCPS will communicate delays and closings through the following:

CASCADE MOUNTAIN WEATHER ZONE
Cascade Mountain Weather Zone (CMWZ)
The CMWZ affects students attending Cascade Elementary School, Smithsburg Middle School, and Smithsburg High School as noted below.
Cascade Elementary School: All students who attend Cascade Elementary School will follow the decision to delay the opening, to close for the day, or to dismiss school early in the CMWZ.
Smithsburg Middle, Smithsburg High, and Out-of District School Students: Given the Cascade Elementary School attendance area includes both higher and lower elevations, the area has been divided into two sections: Map 1 and Map 2. Review the Cascade Mountain Weather Zone Maps and Road Lists.
- Map 1:
- Students who reside in Map 1 are located in the higher elevation. For Smithsburg Middle and Smithsburg High schools, these students will be affected by a decision to implement the CMWZ.
- CMWZ closed: No bus transportation provided in Map 1. Parents have the option to transport their student(s) to school.
- CMWZ delayed two hours: Bus transportation delayed two hours in Map 1. Parents have the option to transport their student(s) to school.
- CMWZ early dismissal: Bus transportation provided at early dismissal in Map 1.
- Students who reside in Map 1 are located in the higher elevation. For Smithsburg Middle and Smithsburg High schools, these students will be affected by a decision to implement the CMWZ.
- Map 2:
- Students who reside in Map 2 are located in the lower elevation. For Smithsburg Middle and Smithsburg High schools, these students will not be affected by a decision to implement the CMWZ. Transportation will be provided according to the regular daily schedule or any inclement weather decision announced for WCPS.
